Biology
Throughout the year, students will be examining our living world through a microscopic lens. Students will be encouraged to think and problem solve like real biologists and will engage in a plethora of laboratory and group work. In particular, students will be studying the basics of chemistry and biochemistry II, cells, genetics, evolution, and biotechnology.
Organic Chemistry/Microbiology
Organic Chemistry is the first semester of a full year course that is followed by Microbiology in the second semester. Students should be science oriented and of high ability. All students planning on majoring in life science, chemistry, engineering or medical careers should strongly consider enrolling in this course.
Organic Chemistry Topics of Study: Organic vs. inorganic compounds; naming & drawing of compounds, properties & reactions; uses of organic compounds including pain relief, fuels, hormones, soaps, fats, plastics, alcohols, caffeine, aromatics.
Microbiology Topics of Study: Classification of microbes; microscopes & staining; growth requirements & storage of microbes; infectious diseases; control of microbes by disinfectants, UV radiation & antibiotics; genetic engineering of microbes to produce insulin, vaccines, etc.

About Mrs. Holland
I attended Augustana college in Rock Island for four years where I double majored in Biology and Secondary Science Education, played the French horn in the symphonic band, and graduated with honors. After graduation, I began teaching science at Pleasant Valley High School and am extremely excited to begin my tenth year teaching. Since I started working at Pleasant Valley, I obtained a masters degree in Educational Leadership as well as Earth Science and Chemistry endorsements. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to work with you this year and look forward to learning and growing together.
